Admission Requirements

Application Forms

Masters Program

Admission to the M.S.Ch.E. program is restricted to those holding a baccalaureate degree in chemical engineering or its equivalent. The M.S.E. program is available to students holding baccalaureate degrees in other fields of engineering and the physical sciences who wish to pursue a broad interdisciplinary program relevant to the major graduate areas administered by the department.

Regular Admission
To be admitted as a regular graduate student, an applicant must have a B.S. degree and a sound record in previous college work with a minimum 3.0/4.0 cumulative grade-point average.

Provisional Admission
Applicants who cannot meet these conditions may be considered for admission in a conditional category. Students admitted with deficiencies in their undergraduate programs are required to take some chemical engineering courses as prerequisites for graduate courses. These requirements are stated as a condition for admission.

Doctoral Prorgram

The department will consider a student's application for admission to doctoral work on the basis of the following criteria:

  1. A B.S. in an accredited Chemical Engineering program or a recognized international program in Chemical Engineering; or a M.S./M.S.E.
  2. A completed application submitted to the WVU Admissions Office; official transcripts of all previous college course work must be supplied,
  3. Grade point average (GPA) exceeding 3.0/4.0 in undergraduate and graduate courses,
  4. Performance on M.S. thesis, if one was written,
  5. Three letters of recommendation
  6. TOEFL scores of 550 or better for non-U.S. degree entrants for whom English is not the national language, and
  7. GRE scores, if requested by the department.

Students admitted will be classified as regular graduate students only. Provisional students, defined as applicants having a GPA less than 3.0/4.0, will not be admitted to the Ph.D. program.
