10/31 - Dow/Union Carbide Reaction Engineering and Catalysis Seminar Series honoring R. Richard Bannister

Catalytic Hydromethanation of Coal and Petroleum Coke to Synthetic Natural Gas

Donald B. Anthony
Chief Technology Officer
GreatPoint Energy Inc.
Cambridge, MA

ABSTRACT

This seminar will review GreatPoint Energy's progress in commercializing a proprietary catalytic hydromethanation technology that converts low-cost coal or petroleum coke into a pipeline-quality synthetic natural gas. The GPE Bluegas(TM) process relies on a proprietary catalyst made of widely abundant, non-toxic metals to generate synthetic natural gas in a single reactor. This one-step process significantly increases the thermal efficiency of conversion and reduces capital costs compared with conventional gasification technologies. In addition, the process offers a near-zero CO2 footprint and an environmentally-friendly alternative to current coal and petroleum coke utilization.
