Welcome to the Department of Chemical Engineering at West Virginia University!
We are very proud of the high quality of our teaching and research programs in our department.
All of our degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels have been recognized as Programs of Excellence by the West Virginia Board of Governors.
Our faculty members are outstanding teachers. Three of our faculty members have been recognized with the WVU Foundation Outstanding Teaching Award. Seven have been recognized by the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources for their outstanding teaching. Three of our faculty members have been recognized at the national level for their contributions to chemical engineering education.
Our faculty members have authored several textbooks that are used at WVU and across the country. These include one for the capstone design class and two in polymers.
In the undergraduate curriculum, open-ended design problems are introduced early in the curriculum and grow in complexity as students become more proficient, both technically and in communication skills. In the capstone design course, seniors organize and operate as professionals in an engineering design and analysis organization.
At the undergraduate level, we provide eligible students with scholarships from the freshman year onwards. We offer electives for specialization in such fields as life sciences, electronic materials, and polymers. Students majoring in chemical engineering can satisfy all of the pre-medical requirements without taking any extra classes. We also offer an undergraduate certificate in biomedical engineering.
Student Chapters of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Honorary Omega Chi Epsilon offer educational and social experiences outside of the classroom and laboratory.
We have been involved in graduate education for a long time, having awarded our first Ph.D. in 1932. We offer graduate teaching assistantships and graduate research assistantships, as well as a limited number of graduate fellowships on a competitive basis to qualified applicants.
The smaller number of students in our department allows us to offer highly personalized education and allows research advisors to spend more time with their students. We encourage graduate-student participation in national and regional professional activities, including the annual Regional Chemical Engineering Graduate Student Symposium.
Our faculty is active in research in a number of areas, including biochemical and biomedical engineering, carbon products, catalysis and reaction engineering, fluidization, fuels, nanotechnology, natural-gas hydrates, particle science and powder technology, polymers and composites, and semiconductor processing.
